"From the early 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames developed and refined the technique of three-dimensional plywood molding and used it to create a variety of furniture and sculptures. Of these early designs, the two-piece elephant, with its tight and counter-curving curves, is the most technically demanding and went not in series production. A prototype given to Lucia Eames, Charles' then fourteen-year-old daughter, was loaned to the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946."
